Vegetable tanning is an artisanal tradition and it is the process of transformation of raw hides — animal skins which are a discard product of the meat industry — into a material that will resist throughout time, using natural tannins extracted from trees (barks, leaves, branches and even fruits sometimes).
This is a slow process that takes around two months and requires specialised craftsmen and less automation, so the cost is higher than other tanning processes.
As opposed to chromium tanning, which is the faster (it takes one day) and the most popular tanning process used in fashion industry, vegetable tanned leather does not contain any toxic substance such as azo-dyes, nickel, PCP (pentachlorophenol) or chrome and it is biodegradable at the end of its life. Vegetable tanned leather is stiff in the beginning but it gets more suppler, comfortable and beautiful over time. Find how to take care of your tanned leather Cordoa Sandals, here.
